How to read the bible

The bible is a mine of knowledge about our past, present and future. Future is foretold and the past narrated in the bible. The book explains why everything happens the way it happens and why it will happen the way it will happen.

From Genesis to Revelation we are taught about this life we possess and how to ensure we do not lose it.

Deuteronomy 30:19

I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;

It is a book meant to help us understand life and choose life for eternity.

Therefore the most important thing to check while reading the bible is our attitude. Why are you reading the bible? You should be reading the bible with intent to be part of the people who choose eternal life. You should be reading it to gain eternal life.

2 Peter 1:19-21

19 [i]And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private [j]interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but [k]holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus brings the good news of the Kingdom so that we have hope beyond this world. If your attitude and reason for reading the bible is what God intends it to be then you will do well. But if your attitude is evil and selfish, how do you expect to see the light in the word of God.

Mathew 6:22-23

22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is [g]good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is [h]bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
